Description : For years in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), the budget allocated to feeding prisoners has been insufficient. In 2020, a food shortage prompted the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to intervene in five prisons in the country.
Malnourished prisoners now receive an extra meal each morning and a daily meal is served to all inmates.
Government subsidies for food for prisoners had not been paid for months. The ICRC has stepped in to temporarily alleviate this situation, but in the longer term, the state must do its job. The rate of severe and moderate malnutrition has dropped, but a sustainable system of feeding prisoners has yet to be established.
In 2020, nearly 35,000 prisoners received ICRC nutritional assistance.
