Description : The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has just completed a distribution of humanitarian aid to 20,000 people who have returned to their homes on the shores of Lake Upemba, in Katanga province, in the south-east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
The beneficiaries fled their villages in late 2005 following clashes between the country's armed forces and Mayi-Mayi militia groups. The ICRC had to overcome enormous logistical problems to conduct the operation given the difficulties involved in reaching the area. In all, more than 90 tonnes of supplies (blankets, clothing for children and adults, hoes, tarpaulins, mats, mosquito nets, soap, buckets, kitchen utensils and salt) were shipped by train from Lubumbashi, the capital of Katanga, to Bukama, near Lake Upemba – a seven-day trip. From there, another two days were needed to convey the aid by barge to the villages for which it was intended (Katondo, Misebo, Mabwe, Kilumbe, Kapando, Kafutu, Lamu and Biandala). Volunteers from the Red Cross Society of the Democratic Republic of the Congo were on the spot to help with the unloading.
