Description : In the Occupied Territories, the reality of daily life means severe restrictions on the movement of people and goods. For many Palestinians, essential journeys to work, school or to visit friends and family have become long and difficult. The restrictions are enforced by hundreds of checkpoints, gates, trenches and earth walls which are sc~ttered throughout the West Bank. Furthermore, age restrictions and permit regulationsare undermining the freedom of movement of young men. Since 2003, West Bank Barrier’swinding route has added to the restrictions and boundaries. These restrictions are particularly burdensome around the city of Nablus. Since 2000, the outlying villages have been increasingly separated from the city. Checkpoints and road closures enable the IDF to control all movements in and out the district capital and Palestinians were forbidden to use major roads around the city. Short journeys which used to take a few minutes, now take hours.
