Description :
The escalation of violence in Gaza since late June 2006 has had serious consequences for civilians living both in and outside the area. Sporadic rocket attacks from the Gaza Strip affect Israeli civilians living within range of the weapons (about 5 to 8 kilometres). In the town of Sderot, a few kilometres north of the Gaza Strip, the rockets, known as "quassams", regularly cause damage to property, life and limb. The ICRC continues to call on all parties to the conflict to observe the provisions of International Humanitarian Law, particularly the prohibition of attacks against civilians and civilian objects.
