Description :
Israel began constructing the West Bank Barrier in 2002. It stretches for hundreds of kilometers into and around Palestinian land. The Israelis say it is intended to protect its citizens against terrorist attacks. But critics claim that the barrier is being used to set the future borders of Israel. The snaking route of the barrier takes deep slices out of Palestinian territory, enclosing large areas of private land. The effect is to divide communities, blocking off roads and services and stifling trade. In many areas, the consequences for local people have been devastating - as Jan Powell reports from the
town of SaIfit.
