Description : The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) sub-delegation in Paoua is in the final phase of a series of distributions of basic necessities to some 13,500 families in the sub-prefectures of Paoua and Markounda.
These people were forced to leave their home villages to seek refuge in the bush, following clashes in late 2006 and early 2007 between armed opposition in the north-west and government forces.
To date, the humanitarian and security situation in the Central African Republic remains worrying in the northern regions, and most IDPs are not ready to return. Access to essential goods remains problematic for the vast majority of them, especially during the rainy season.
This ICRC assistance, which will continue in the coming weeks, is being carried out with the support of Central African Red Cross volunteers. It should help mitigate the direct effects of the conflict on the daily lives of displaced people by providing them with basic necessities such as tarpaulins, mats, blankets, soap, washing basins and cooking kits.
