Description : Over the past months, the world has been witnessing an ever-increasing global food crisis. Escalating prices of primary agricultural produce, together with an unprecedented increase in oil prices, are hitting the poorest of the poor, who have to spend more than half of their income on food and water. In the over 50 countries where the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) operates, armed conflict or other situations of violence add to the burden of millions of affected people. In order to assist the most vulnerable, the ICRC has been considerably stepping up its humanitarian assistance over the recent months (late 2008). In Somalia, the ICRC delivered four months' worth of dry-food rations to nearly half a million people, and has been trucking over two million litres of drinking water every day. In Afghanistan, the ICRC and Afghan Red Crescent volunteers distributed 500 truckloads of food to some 280,000 people in four remote provinces in the north of the country. Such emergency assistance, however, is only a short-term solution to fend off severe malnutrition and starvation. In the long term, there is a need to find ways to help the affected communities become self-sufficient again.
