One year after the conflict between Russia and Georgia in August 2008, thousands of people are living in extremely precarious conditions. Families have been separated, lives have been destroyed and access to basic services remains difficult.
In the ruins of the village of Satskheneti in South Ossetia, only five elderly people remain. Joyce Hood, a nurse with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), visits them regularly. In 2209, she was awarded the Florence Nightingale Medal for outstanding courage and dedication in caring for victims of armed conflict and natural disasters.
