Description : About 4,000 people have died and 90,000 have been infected by the cholera epidemic in Zimbabwe. Although the number of new cases decreased in March, those dealing with the epidemic believe it is still too early to speak of a real improvement.
In Nyamupamira, a village in the Makonde district of Mashonaland West, 180 km from Harare, there is a rudimentary cholera treatment unit. It is one of nine units established by the government health authorities and supported by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). These units were established to provide medical assistance close to rural communities, as they cannot reach health centres. The nearest clinic in Nyamupamira is 30 km away.
