Over the past fifteen years, there has been a marked increase of rapes cases in the Eastern Congo in the wake of decades of conflict. Since the fighting intensified last August 2008 there have been increasing reports of weapon-bearers resorting to acts of sexual violence. With fresh outbreaks of hostilities in North and South Kivu over recent months, tens of thousands of people live in fear of physical and sexual violence. The severity of all forms of physical and psychological violence is exacerbated by the widespread availability of arms and close proximity with arms bearers.
