Eastern Congo has been called the the rape capital of the world. Hundreds of thousands of women have been sexually assaulted by various warring groups during the decade long conflict between government and armed opposition groups. Exact figures are difficult to come by. But according to a recent independent survey conducted for the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) more than a quarter of those interviewed in the Democractic Republic of Congo knew someone who had been sexually abused. And, as Claire Doole reports, the numbers of men and boys who are being raped and sexually abused seems to be rising.
