A 150 years on from the creation of the first Geneva Convention, our reflections are that today more than ever, the rules and principles found in that international law are relevant. They are relevant and they are important. But as well as being relevant and important today, based on a 150 years ago, we need to continue to reflect on how this area of law evolves. How can we make sure that what happens in reality, in the field and the experiences of people during times of armed conflict are reflected adequately in the law? What are we doing about matters such as cyber warfare, about autonomous weapons? What are we doing about issues of highly explosive weapons in densely populated areas? We must continue to look to the past and understand the importance of those principles and rules and move to the future to make sure that this always provides the most protection we can.
