3 December is the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. In the countries where we are working, people with disabilities are often among those who suffer the greatest hardship. This is because services, education and employment continue to be inaccessible to them. In Afghanistan, we offer people with disabilities who undergo treatment in our physical rehabilitation centres the opportunity to learn a skill and thus to get a job, or a small loan to start a business. Every year, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) provides this kind of support for around 3,000 patients in Afghanistan. Meet Shafiq, who had an original idea – he opened a shop making a special type of TV antennae in Mazar-i-Sharif. This small business helped him change his life and provide for his family.
