Description : The continuous fighting and constant insecurity in Syria have affected all aspects of daily life. There are millions of displaced and vulnerable people across the country. The lives of these people depend totally on the aid delivered. The basics of life from water, food and health became the dream of millions of people in Syria.
Since the beginning of the conflict in Syria, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in partnership with SARC have been distributing food parcels to the people in need. Tens of thousands of people who receive the relief aid find it hard to prepare cooked meals for many reasons; logistical and financial.
Therefore, the ICRC in 2014 - through SARC - started supporting local charities to run collective kitchens that provide daily meals to impoverished and vulnerable people.
Today, the ICRC supports around 17 collective kitchens in Aleppo, Homs, Lattakia, Rural Damascus and Damascus. Through these kitchens, more than 40.000 people receive cooked meals daily.
In Homs, the ICRC in coordination with SARC support six collective kitchens with bulk food and fuel for cooking. In addition to that, the ICRC has carried rehabilitation activities in some of these kitchens and provided some kitchens with fridges, generators and other needed equipment.
Al-Hamra kitchen is one of these collective kitchens in Homs city. The work started one year ago in the kitchen with 200 meals for 1000 people. Today the kitchen provides around 2000 people with daily meals.
The kitchen is run by six women, who work every day from 08:00 to 18:00. It takes them around three hours to prepare the ingredients, wash and chop the vegetables. At 12:00 they start cooking on two ovens only.
