On 29 August 2014, President Maurer participated in a symposium in Beijing on the 150th anniversary of the Geneva Convention co-organised by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the Chinese Foreign Ministry. In his speech, the President spoke about the challenges of humanitarian law and action, emphasizing the dialogue the ICRC is developing with non-State actors. The other speakers - a vice-minister of foreign affairs, the executive vice-president of the Red Cross Society of China and the chargé d'affaires of the Swiss embassy - shared their concerns with an audience consisting of some representatives of the Chinese authorities and diplomats from neighbouring countries.
