Description : Within the context of the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture, the ICRC seeks to organize, within the conference cycle on “Generating respect for the law”, a public event on “Solitary confinement : how to preserve humanity in high security settings”. The panel has the aim to raise awareness on the issue of solitary confinement and the related challenge of preserving humane treatment, even in high security environments.
This conference gathered the ICRC head of the detention Unit, Catherine Deman as a moderator, and as panelists, Sharon Shalev, research associate at the Centre for Criminology, University of Oxford and author/founder of SolitaryConfinement.org; Terry Waite, president of Y Care International and of Hostage UK, former hostage negotiator; Tom Enger, director, head of Regulations and security, Norwegian correctional services.
