Description : Armed conflicts, violence, migration processes and natural disasters lead to the disappearance of people around the world. Those who go missing are victims of what has happened, but so are their families, who suffer a range of physical, emotional and psychosocial effects, often compounded by legal and economic difficulties.
In the work of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) with families of missing persons, in addition to the profound suffering they endure on a daily basis, the relatives express multiple common needs that impact their personal, physical, mental, family and social lives. The main ones are :
- To know the fate and whereabouts of their disappeared relative.
- Dignified treatment by authorities, institutions and communities.
- Legal recognition
- Coping with uncertainty
- Mitigating the economic impact
- Dignify the memory
