Description :
ICRC President Peter Maurer completed his first Washington visit on April 11, 2013 after a series of meetings with senior US officials, including President Barack Obama. Mr. Maurer speaks about the importance of the ICRC's relationship with the United States as well as some of the key files he discussed while in Washington: Guantanamo, Syria, Afghanistan, but also the relevance of international humanitarian law in contemporary armed conflicts and the continued need for neutral, impartial and independent humanitarian action. Finally, Mr. Maurer reiterates his call for the administration and the US Congress to urgently find a way to resolve all pending humanitarian, legal and policy issues relating to the detention of persons held at Guantanamo Bay.
