Description : The number of war wounded is on the rise in northern Mali and therefore the need for war surgery. Since the beginning of the year, 268 war-wounded patients have been operated on by teams from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) – a clear increase compared to last year. The ICRC’s surgical teams went into action when the ongoing clashes broke out on 26 July in the Kidal region. They have treated 43 people with conflict wounds in the referral health centre in Kidal and at Gao hospital. The conditions are very tough for the stoic surgeons, who are doing everything they can in the absence of State-provided services.
At Gao hospital, two ICRC-supported operating theatres are ready to treat patients. The ICRC has been supporting the hospital since April 2012. The ICRC teams focus on treating the most critical patients, such as those with gunshot wounds.
Following the latest clashes, the ICRC has also started visiting detainees in Kidal. The purpose of the visits is to ensure that the detainees are treated humanely and to improve their conditions of detention. “We remind all parties of their obligation to respect the dignity of detainees,” stresses Jean-Nicolas Marti, ICRC head of delegation in Mali.
