Description : Street violence, intimidation and sectarian tension still mar the lives of young people across Northern Ireland, despite ceasefires and a peace agreement that ended large scale conflict. Community groups work with young people in flashpoint areas, through activity programmes and training, to keep them from being arrested by the police or becoming involved with the paramilitary groups that still operate. Project workers and young people describe the challenges they face and how they are tackling them.
The ICRC supports a number of local programmes, including the 50/50 project in Glengormley, south-east Antrim, to the north of Belfast, and the Accessing Youth Engagement project, part of the Fountain Street Community Development Association in Strabane, in the western part of Northern Ireland.
