Description :
“Receiving a call from the ICRC was a source of relief,” Fayhaa, wife of Mohammad Al-Qiq.
Mohammad Al-Qiq, a former Palestinian detainee, who went on a prolonged hunger strike while in Israeli place of detention, talks about his relationship with the ICRC detention delegate and doctor who visited him 13 times during his strike. The ICRC stayed in close contact with Mohammad’s family throughout his strike to ensure they were updated about his situation and to exchange verbal greetings.
The ICRC as a neutral humanitarian intermediary cannot advocate for the end of a hunger strike, nor for the concerned authorities to agree with the striker's demands. However, it encourages the patient, their representatives and the respective authorities involved to keep communicating and exchanging in order to find a solution that avoids any loss of life.
