Description : The remains of 25 people who went missing in connection with the 1992-1993 armed conflict in Abkhazia were handed over to their families on October 17, 2017.
For all these years, the families of the missing persons have gone through a very long road of uncertainty, enduring the pain of not knowing what had happened to their relatives…
The ambiguity they faced throughout these years with regard to the fate and whereabouts of their loved ones leads to emotional exhaustion, and leaves long lasting wounds. The disappearance of a family member is accompanied by endless expectation and unbearable despair, affecting the entire lives not only of the families themselves, but of the society as a whole. It requires an impressive strength and relentless patience.
In Georgia, the ICRC has been working on the problem of missing persons since 2004. In 2010 we succeeded in setting up two coordination mechanisms for clarifying the fate of persons missing in relation to the armed conflicts of the 1990s and August 2008, and their aftermaths.
Eka and Vladimer, Guram’s children, recall the long period of expectation and uncertainty and share a story of their family. Guram is one of the 25 persons, identified and handed over to the families with the support of the International Committee of the Red Cross Georgia in October 2017.
