Description :
In Rwanda, as more and more people were arrested in connection with the 1994 genocide, and as the legal system was not yet equipped to deal with the thousands of cases pending, the problem of overcrowding in the prisons reached alarming proportions. Conditions of detention were catastrophic, as shown in this report shot in a Kigali prison. To try and improve these conditions, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) called upon the international community and launched a large-scale programme for detainees in the country's prisons, providing them with water, food, sanitary facilities and medical care.
