Description :
North East Nigeria has been ravaged by conflict since 2009. Farmers haven’t been able to plant their crops. Health facilities have been destroyed. That has led to a huge spike in severe malnutrition.
In Nigeria, the International Committee of the Red CRoss (ICRC) is implementing the community management of acute malnutrition approach, known as CMAM for short. When children are suffering from severe acute malnutrition without medical complications, they can be treated at home. They are invited to the clinic once a week for a medical check-up and to get their weekly ration of therapeutic food. If their medical situation deteriorates, usually when acute malnutrition is combined with other severe health complications we bring them in to a stabilization centre, where there are three key stages of treatment :
Stabilization where the ICRC treat them and start careful feeding.
Transition is where we introduce more calories and ensure they are eating enough.
Rehabilitation where we discharge them and continue to monitor them.
The ICRC works with health authorities and Red Cross national societies in several countries to implement the community management of acute malnutrition approach. Every year, the programme supports over 40,000 children under the age of five suffering from severe acute malnutrition.
