Description : Residents of the village of Beit Skaria traditionally grow fresh fruit and vegetables; grapes, olives, or figs. But their path to making a living can be a stony one.
On September 2017, the village has been almost completely surrounded, trapped, in effect, by settlements.
It made ordinary life, the simple act of getting from home, to work, and back again, extraordinarily difficult.
Villagers were not allowed to use settlement roads: they had to make long detours, and navigate checkpoints.
They used to stand for hours on the highway, hoping to be able to bring their fresh produce to market.
Early in September, ICRC president Peter Maurer came to Beit Skaria to see for himself.
During the visit, the village was quiet, it already had a feeling of abandonment. The local school was scheduled for demolition. If children had remained living in Beit Skaria, they would soon had to walk miles to get to school, just as their parents had to travel miles to make a living. Perhaps Beit Skaria will be empty one day.
The ICRC, seeing the realities on the ground, has been calling with renewed urgency for the government of Israel to address the legal and humanitarian consequences of the settlements.
