Description : The president of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Peter Maurer has been visiting the northern areas of Rakhine State for the first time at the end of June 2018. During his three-day visit he observed a Red Cross Movement mobile medical clinic in Buthidaung and joined a food distribution in Maungdaw. The Red Cross Movement was scaling up and doubling its distributions as monsoon season approached, so people had enough food to last when roads were inaccessible.
Ten months before nearly 700,000 people fled an outbreak of violence and were then in Bangladesh. Those who remained had suffered from lack of access to markets, livelihoods and healthcare. People were finding it harder to move around and couldn't carry out their livelihoods.
The Red Cross Movement had been the only humanitarian organization on the ground in Rakhine State until then, and had assisted at that moment almost 300,000 people with food, safe water, shelter, healthcare and livelihood assistance.
