Description : In the tiny Pauktaw islands, near the Rakhine State capital Sittwe, a project is under way to help villagers make their homes cyclone resistant. Many of the houses in Pyaing Taung and Sin Tet Maw village tracts were destroyed by Cyclone Mora in May 2017, and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is trying to prevent that happening again.
The ICRC is working in 24 villages in this cyclone-prone area to reinforce 355 houses before monsoon season arrives. Houses will be made stronger and village carpenters trained and paid to do the work, providing an income for community members. Almost 2,000 people will benefit from this project.
