Description : For pastoralists in the Lake Chad region, the wellbeing of their livestock and their families are intertwined. The cattle are their only source of income and food. They provide milk, meat, and income through the sale of the animals.
Conflict in the region has disrupted the lives of millions of people, forcing pastoralists to move with their cattle to safer areas. This in turn has made the cattle susceptible to new diseases, risking the lives of the pastoralists and their families.
To protect the livelihoods of the pastoralists, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has been conducting cattle vaccinations targeting over 200,000 animals. This campaign has reached 2,385 families made up of IDPs and residents. The vaccination is the first veterinary project implemented by the ICRC delegation in Chad in collaboration with the ministry of livestock.
