World Water Day is held annually on 22 March as a means of focusing attention on the importance of freshwater and advocating for the sustainable management of freshwater resources.
Water is the source of life. However, 2.1 billion people worldwide still live without access to safe water at home. In war-torn areas, with infrastructure destroyed and water supply disrupted, displaced people have no access to clean water, which often leads to epidemics.
The Internationa Committe of the Red Cross (ICRC) helps affected people restore their lives by building water pumps and installing water purifying equipment.
