Description :
The village of Rugari in North Kivu, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), used to be the land of banana production. But bacterial wilt has destroyed most of the crops, decimating harversts and the income of hundreds of households. "People used to make beer from the bananas. By selling the beer they made enough money to send their children to school." Judith has a little three-year-old son. She is one of those affected by the crisis. "Because of the disease I had to chop down all the banana trees on my land." The traditional drink made from bananas is called "kasiksi". "We can't make the traditional drink any more. We have to buy it from other villages. A jerrican costs me 5 US dollars." The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has distributed 9,000 healthy banana trees to the inhabitants of Rugari. The trees will generate income for the villagers again. The first banana harwest will be in 2020.
