Description :
Simon Baker, the general secretary of the European Amputee Football Federation, trained fifteen coaches, twelve referees and eighty amputee players from different areas of the Gaza strip, following the invitation from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).
The first football team was organized in Gaza a year ago. Simon Baker's visit was the first opportunity for the players to benefit from high level professional coaching and hone their skills. It contributed to boost interest in the amputee football in the strip, where five new teams were created. On April 13, the first Gaza football tournament was held among the six teams.
The project will continue in the coming months with the goal of creating a strong team that can represent Gaza in international competitions.
Gaza has some 1600 amputees, among the population of two million people. According to the Ministry of Health, 136 people lost limbs since violence escalated in the border areas one year ago. Out of eighty amputee football players, twenty lost their limbs after they were injured in the border violence.
Simon Baker lost his leg in 2004 in a building site accident. Since then he has pushed every boundary to prove that amputees can be athletes. ICRC helps people with disabilities fight stigma and gain confidence through sports, as part of its physical rehabilitation program in Gaza.
