Description :
1. Water from Gaza’s wells is undrinkable. Only 3% of groundwater is fit for human consumption. 97% is polluted with sea water and agricultural nitrates. Salty water from taps can only be used for washing and cleaning.
2. Most people have water delivered by truck. But this process is prone to fecal contamination. Water-related diseases are the main cause of child deaths in Gaza and account for a quarter of all illnesses according to WHO.
3. Electricity shortages have put a strain on sewage plants. Every day 110 million litres of poorly treated sewage flows in to the sea. But with so few options children continue to play on the beach.
4. Water treatment plants are in disrepair. Imported goods are restricted so materials for repair are not always available.
5. Farmers are heavily reliant on rain water for their crops. The ICRC helps vulnerable farmers with rainwater harvesting projects and provide seeds that resist salinity and require less irrigation.
