Description :
Recent events in Bosnia marked one ofthe-most critical phases ofthe three-year
conflict. Serbian Threes shelled Muslim areas in the thee of UnIted Nations’ ultimata and a NATO bombardment. In defiance of the Geneva convention, they also used captured UN soldiers as human shields to protect strategic targets. In another illegal strategy connected to escalating hostilities, Serbian personnel have cut the watersupply to Sarajevo, so civilians have to queue at stand-pipes to collect water whilst the battles rage around them. In the context of the complexities of the Bosnian situation, the logistics ofthe suppty ofsafe clean water are a study in the necessity for co-operation and integration and the International Committee ofthe Red Cross has launched a campaign to improve the protection of both water supplies and water engineers during war.
