Description : In Kasai province, inter-ethnic violence in the Kakenge region has ended thanks to an initiative endorsed by the women's community. It has been a long, difficult and challenging journey.

"It was no longer possible, we "mothers" of Kakenge could no longer live like this, with fear in our stomachs, watching our children and husbands perish at the hands of machetes. "Charlie Shanga, 33, then launched the Kakenge Women's Platform (KWP), which brings together women who want to see an end to violence, whatever its origin. Their common suffering makes it possible to overcome differences and unite around the same goal: that of living again in peace in the city, then deserted and deprived of basic services.
Now, life in Kakenge has resumed, the shops have reopened, the children are going back to school. Kakenge has regained its harmony. "If we are at peace today, it is thanks to them," says one of the community leaders, pointing to the women of the Platform. "It's like a god descended on the community to bring everyone together," says the leader of another clan.

By August 2019, after the violence and the return of the inhabitants to the area, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) had distributed cash assistance to more than 9,900 families in Kakenge to cover the population's needs: food, schooling, access to health care and the reconstruction of destroyed houses. Collaboration with KFP took place during the distribution to raise community awareness of the ICRC's activities and those of the Red Cross Society of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
