Description :
Animation accompanying the music composed by the world-renowned oud musician Nasser Shamma.
War is like fire; burning whatever comes in its way… unless it’s tamed.
Man has always known how to fight.
It was necessary for his survival.
But then, people started fighting each other. They fought for many different reasons. Fighting had no rules.
As man wandered around the world looking for prosperity; he never stopped trying to set rules ancient civilizations were enlightened and believed in the importance of regulating wars.
And the result was the code of Hammurabi during the Babylon Dynasty.
And the law of Manu in the Indian civilization.
And the « Art of War » book in the Chinese civilization.
And then, Islam came with detailed teachings clearly forbidding attacking non-fighters and calling to protect human dignity during war.
In a different time and far place.
In the Italian city of Solferino, a fierce battle was fought.
Where blood was shed.
And this motivated Henry Dunant with an idea.
Which later became the basis for International Humanitarian Law (IHL). Which was globally accepted and welcomed
And there it was; an international law protecting victims of wars.
Over time, weapons and methods of warfare have developed.
Becoming more powerful and destructive.
Until we reached to the way wars are fought today.
The dangers of war are imminent in the face of humanity.
Humans will remain unable to confront it unless there are rules taming those battles.
What will humanity do to face wars today? And what will wars do to our humanity? This is what IHL is concerned with.
