Description :
Wednesday 1 April late at night, a cargo plane sent by the Ukrainian authorities to Switzerland left Geneva for Kyiv with 14 tons of medical material. This material is aimed to help slow the spread of COVID-19 in Donbas, a region where people are struggling with the threat of the virus while already suffering from six years of conflict. The World Health Organization also took the opportunity to send COVID-19 response material (1 ton). In these times of crisis, close coordination and solidarity between organizations is essential.
The cargo carried important specific COVID-19 items such as oxygen concentrators which are pivotal in helping persons who start to develop a pneumonia caused by the COVID-19. These machines are especially important to try and prevent patient having to be intubated thus needing a ventilator and necessary nursing and medical expertise. In addition to this a large portion of the medical cargo is made of dual-purpose material, which means that these items, such as disinfectant fluids, syringes or IV fluids can be used in the fight against COVID-19 as well as supporting traditional activities such as war surgery.
