Description :
At the Central prison in Bamako, Mali, everyone needs to wear a mask ! To avoid the propagation of COVID-19, detainees are fabricating masks to distribute to visitors. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has donated a sewing machine, wax fabric and elastic bands for the detainees to sew the masks. The ICRC also provided the detainees with models of washable mask approved by the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. A mask is given to each visitor who doesn't have one.
The detainees produce roughly 500 masks per week. The ICRC then buy all the masks. The revenues will be distributed according to the stipulations of the penitentiary act, one third for the detainees, one third the fines and one third to the prison administration.
Coronavirus could constitute a catastrophe in places of detention. In Mali, the ICRC iworks with detaining authorities to reduce the risk of propagation of COVID-19 in eleven places of detention.
