Description : The call for a global ceasefire in response to the COVID-19 crisis has not been heard.
Civilians suffer from intense military operations and the presence of criminal gangs.
This list of threats is not exhaustive. Rising violence has led to the disruption or closure of basic public services.
Many health centres and schools in Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso have been destroyed or closed. Doctors and teachers
just leave. In turn, people flee the insecurity to safer places but can’t make ends meet.
Already vulnerable families become poorer and rely on humanitarian aid or survive in host communities. More than one million people have been forcibly displaced in these three countries.
As if this was not enough, climate change is destroying pastures and crops at an alarming rate. Animals die of hunger or diseases and are in such bad shape that they can’t be sold at a fair price.
On top of this, restrictions on movement to curb the COVID-19 pandemic has put trade and exchange to a halt.
Dwindling income. Pervasive fear. No access to health care and education. Loss of traditional way of life. No food
What kind of existence is this?
With National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, the International Committe of the Red Cross (ICRC) helps as much as we can. It distributes food, vaccinates cattle, supports health systems, talks to arms bearers.
But it cannot do it all. Violence must cease.
