Description : Before COVID-19, over one in five people in war zone lived with a mental health problem. That number has only increased with the pandemic. But access to help has not. In low and middle-income countries, over 75% of people with severe mental health problems do not receive any treatment. That is around twice as many than in high-income countries. Now COVID-19 has exacerbated these inequalities, and we know it will be with us for the foreseeable future. So how can we make sure everyone is able to take care of their mental health ? The good news is States already promised to take responsibility for their citizens’ mental health. This means investment in staff and culturally adapted programmes. We can’t let the global economic downturn reverse these commitments. Mental health programmes need to be included in the COVID-19 response. Every dollar invested in treatment for depression and anxiety can lead to a five dollar return in better health.
