Do you know why cluster munitions are so deadly? One cluster munition can be made up of 600 submunitions. Large numbers of these submunitions don’t explode as intended, leaving huge areas, often tens of thousands of sq meters, contaminated for decades. Their interesting shape, color and small size often attracts people. This can be deadly. In 2018, 99% of cluster munition casualties were civilians and the majority (52%) were children.
Any use, anywhere, by anyone, must be condemned. 110 states have already joined the Convention on Cluster Munitions banning these weapons. It is essential that all states to join the Convention for a world free of cluster munitions. These weapons should never be used again.
