Description :
40 years ago the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) set up its first rehabilitation centre in Pakistan, to treat Afghani refugees injured in the war. The centre provided prosthetic limbs, crutches and wheelchairs to those that needed them. Within two years, three more centres had opened in Africa, treating and hundreds of people. Over the years the work of the centres expanded, to assist not just people affected by war, but anyone who needed help. The centres made their own prostheses and mobility aids from available materials, and also began training local staff to manufacture and fit the devices.
Since 1979 the designs and fit of prostheses has improved dramatically. Although they are still largely made on site, key components are imported from Switzerland to ensure the quality. In addition to creating and fitting prostheses, the ICRC and its partners also provide full-scale physiotherapy services, as well as orthotics, wheelchairs and other mobility aids. The aim of the centres has always been to assist people’s physical needs - to ensure each person can regain their mobility and get the right help - allowing them to be independent.
Since 1979 the ICRC has helped nearly 2 million people with disabilities, providing 1.8 million assistive devices. They now support 233 projects in 53 countries around the world.
