Description : Few were those who left a true impact on the nursing profession as Florence Nightingale did.
Florence is a British nurse whose dedication continues to inspire the work of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement all around the world.
Born in Florence, Italy, in 1820, Florence decided to work as a nurse at a time when nursing was far from being a well-respected profession.
The British government entrusted her with caring for wounded soldiers in the Crimean War, during which she led a team of nurses in often terrible conditions.
Florence was stunned by the lack of military medical services and the human cost of poor hygiene and absence of health care.
That is why she devoted her life to ensure better conditions that could preserve the dignity of wounded soldiers.
As for the letters which she wrote to the families of these soldiers, they were a source of inspiration to Henry Dunant, the founder of the Red Cross. Consequently, he decided to establish national societies composed of volunteers to help the victims of war. These national societies later became known as the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.
In fact, Florence Nightingale's beliefs and actions inspired some of our fundamental principles such as humanity and neutrality, as well as all activities related to restoring family links, such as Red Cross messages.
In honor of Florence, the International Committee of the Red Cross decided (ICRC) in 1912, to create a commemorative Florence Nightingale Medal, to be awarded to all those who set an example of dedication and sacrifice in the nursing and healthcare field.
Thank you to all the nursing staff around the world.
