Description : Khalil is a cheeky 13-year old who lives with his grandparents. He loves sports and his friends. When he grows up, he wants to run a café. But just a couple of years ago, he was orphaned in a foreign land.
Khalil spent five years abroad in a conflict zone, where his father went to fight. One day his mother and brothers were killed in shelling, he was injured and alone.
He spent 10 months in an orphanage before being repatriated to live with his grandparents. They were overjoyed to have him back safely.
Due to the trauma he had suffered, Khalil struggled to adjust. His behavior worsened. Exhausted and confused, his grandparents sometimes told him they regretted his return. He became more and more distressed.
Families in such situations need help. In Khalil’s case, the International Comittee of the Red Cross (ICRC) provided direct psychological support for him and his grandparents. and helped train teachers, social workers and others in understanding child trauma and creating a safe environment.
One year on their lives have changed. Khalil is making sense of what happened to him. He sees a future. He has hobbies and friends. He’s in a safe environment that is so important for his healing.
Sadly, many families are not receiving the same level of care as Khalil did. And many more children have yet to return to their home countries. The situation is bleak and extremely complex. But it is not impossible to act.
