Hundreds of thousands of people around the world are missing or separated from their families due to armed conflict, violence, migration, environmental disasters and other humanitarian emergencies. This tragedy is preventable. Every effort should be made to prevent even one person from going missing.
Each year the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the Red Cross and Red Crescent family links network receive around 25,000 new requests to locate a missing person. Many never return or are heard from again. The tragedy of their story ripples out and affects countless people around them–emotionally, physically, legally, financially and socially.
It’s often a complex and lengthy process to solve a case of a missing person, but sometimes it’s as simple as a phone call. Throughout this disorienting time, families of the missing are in constant motion—searching, looking, wondering, remembering and missing their loved ones. Their search can continue for decades.
The COVID-19 pandemic has prolonged this agony, as families face restrictions in movement that delay search and identification processes. From the confinement of their homes, families of the missing have tried to continue their search. The Red Cross and Red Crescent family links network does everything possible to help these families.
The ICRC reminds the authorities of their responsibilities and supports them in fulfilling their obligations. It searches for the missing and reconnects families, while addressing their psycho-social, economic or legal needs.
