On February 24th, 2022, Peter Maurer, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) president, recordered this statement on the conflict in Ukraine.
"My thoughts are with the Ukrainian people who woke up to escalating violence. Many of them had to leave their lives and had to look for a save haven somewhere else.
My thoughts are also to our teams on the ground, who are eager to respond to the suffering which is now increasing and emerging.
And therefore, today, my call is threefold:
First, that IHL is respected by the parties. That civilians and detainees are protected. And that civilian infrastructure continues running so that schools, hospitals and homes can continue to be and work.
Secondly, my call is to all parties and all states of the international community to do everything in their power to prevent an escalation of violence of which the costs have to be borne by the civilian population.
And thirdly, my call is to let neutral, impartial and independent humanitarian action unfold in Ukraine so that the red cross and the red crescent movement and other humanitarian actors can continue delivering services to the Ukrainian people."
El 24 de febrero de 2022, Peter Maurer, presidente del Comité internacional de la Cruz Roja (CICR), hizo esta declaración sobre el conflicto en Ucrania.
"Mis pensamientos están con las personas de Ucrania, que despertaron hoy en medio de una escalada de violencia. Muchas de ellas tuvieron que abandonar sus vidas y buscar refugio en otros lugares.
Mis pensamientos están también con nuestros equipos en el terreno, que están listos para responder al sufrimiento que ahora está creciendo.
Por eso, hoy, mi pedido tiene tres partes:
En primer lugar, que las partes respeten el derecho internacional humanitario, que los civiles y detenidos sean protegidos, y que la infraestructura civil siga funcionando para que las escuelas, hospitales y hogares puedan seguir estando y trabajando.
En segundo lugar, mi pedido es a todas las partes y todos los Estados de la comunidad internacional, para que hagan todo lo que esté en su poder para prevenir una escalada de violencia cuyo costo debe ser asumido por la población civil.
Y en tercer lugar, mi pedido es que se permita el desarrollo de la acción humanitaria neutral, imparcial e independiente en Ucrania, para que el Movimiento de la Cruz Roja y de la Media Luna Roja y otros actores humanitarios puedan seguir brindando sus servicios a las personas en Ucrania."
