Waging wars in cities with heavy explosive weapons is deadly for civilians. It is a humanitarian imperative for all parties to avoid their use in populated areas.
All too often, these weapons don’t hit a specific target with accuracy. Instead, they impact large areas and can have indiscriminate effects. They cause extensive civilian death, injuries and long-lasting psychological harm.
When they damage critical civilian infrastructures, essential public services collapse one after the other, forcing people to flee. The level of destruction can be so intense that the city dies.
The military target may be destroyed... But at what cost?
