Description : The first interviewee, Jima Bol Mabor, was admitted at Juba Military Hospital in June 2019 and his leg was amputated at the hospital. For two weeks, he refused the surgery as he was considering death would be less painful. He was finally convinced it was the best solution thanks to our team and his family’s efforts. And thanks to the support he’s getting (both psychological and physical), he’s now much more confident. In addition, he was preparing his wedding when he was shot and the fear of the amputation was deeply linked to not being able to face this woman normally, in a society where physical norms are very important.
The second interviewee, Ida Andersen, is psychologist at the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). Mental health support is very important. It must be included in the first wave of humanitarian assistance. This is why the ICRC has developed a mental health and psychosocial support programme that is implemented during and after armed conflict and other situations of violence.
