Description :
In the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), on the shores of Lake Kivu, the population of Goma is growing rapidly. Years of armed violence and structural problems have made it impossible for many people to have access to water and sanitation. Only 40% of the inhabitants have access to drinkable water, and in the western part of the city, almost no house is connected to the network. Some women, like Mama Mika, come to the lake foru times a day, carrying two 25-litres jerrycans.
The absence of infrastructure also affects essential services, such as the N'Dosho hospital, where International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) surgeons operate on the war wounded people.
Thanks to partnerships and innovative financial solutions, the ICRC will enable over 300,000 people to access to drinkable water by 2026. Once the works are completed, it will hand over the infrastructure to an operator, able to provide quality water at affordable costs and in a financially viable way.
