Description :
Daraya is administratively a rural city close to Damascus. However its close location to the capital gave it a strategic importance, in 2016, Daraya witnessed one of the fiercest battles, that resulted in heavy damage for the infrastructure in the city. In 2019 the population started to return to their homes, and several thousand families indeed tried to restart their lives regardless of the high destruction level (more than 70% of infrastructure and construction were damaged), disruption of services, and heavy weapon contamination.
Currently around 50.000 people are inhabiting Daraya, even though there are no drinking water sources (especially after the incident of the water pollution that was provided from Rabweh borehole; as the water pipelines leading to Daraya got contaminated by a damaged sewage line lately).
Afifa Habassi, an International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) explosive ordnance disposal specialist (EOD) in Syria explains what does it take to be an EOD specialist and answering different questions about her job.
