Description :
Mali. Niger. Mauritania. Burkina Faso. Violence in the central Sahel is pushing a food crises to the brink. More than 10.5 million people in the region are facing hunger.
Here's the situation :
Conflict has displaced millions of people. In Burkina Faso alone 1.8 million people fled their homes in search for safety. That's almost 10% of the population.
80% of people in the region rely on agriculture to survive. But when they are forced to flee, they lose access to their lands and crops are not planted or harvested.
The Sahel is at the forefront of climate change. A major drought has caused a sharp drop in crop production. Niger and Mauritania have produced 40% less food than the 5 year average.
Water is in short supply. In Mali, lake Faguibine has completely dried up causing entire communities to be displaced. The Red Cross and Red Crescent movement is responding to this crisis but more needs to be done to avert a catastrophe. Humanitarian organizations must be allowed unfettered access to populations in need. Long-term and innovative solutions must be implemented to break the cycle of suffering.
